THE ROSES
FEATURE FILM 2025COSTUME DESIGNER — PC WILLIAMS
My role: CROWD COSTUME SUPERVISOR
The Roses required building a believable small-town South California world from scratch — a specific visual identity that extended from the principal cast all the way through to 500 fitted background artists, plus additional fittings on the day. Every costume decision, including the local police uniforms, had to feel rooted in that particular American geography without tipping into stereotype.
The central creative idea I proposed to PC Williams was to use the crowd as an active extension of the two lead characters' worlds. In scenes centred on Theo, the background palette shifts to earthy, deeper tones — his emotional register reflected in the people around him. In Ivy's world, the crowd becomes livelier, with prints and more expressive choices, though always anchored within the constraints of South Californian style. The crowd doesn't just populate the frame — it tells you whose story you're in.
As Crowd Costume Supervisor I ran the full department: overseeing all fittings and sourcing, managing the budget and logistics, and hiring and leading the crowd team throughout the production, always working in close collaboration with PC Williams on the overall design.
